ANSWER STORY
Mathei Jackel survived the war by being saved- and later joining the *Partisans (yayay)!! (I wonder if I would go with someone who was just like "We're against the war, Come with us," but then again, that's a story for another day) By joining the Partisans, he was protected, and survived the war by staying and traveling with them, and avoided being put into a **concentration camp.
*Partisan-an adherent or supporter of a person, group, party, or cause, esp. a person who shows a biased, emotional allegiance
**Concentration Camp-A camp where civilians, enemy aliens, political prisoners, and sometimes prisoners of war are detained and confined, typically under harsh conditions
